{"id":7571,"date":"2020-12-22T20:58:29","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T20:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calisthenicsnerd.osmiumweb.com\/protein-why-do-we-need-it\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T09:47:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T09:47:35","slug":"protein-why-do-we-need-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athenscalisthenicscenter.gr\/en\/protein-why-do-we-need-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Protein &#8211; Why Do We Need it"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proteins<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are large\u00a0<strong>biomolecules<\/strong> consisting of one or more long chains of<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amino_acid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amino acid\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>residues<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They perform a vast array of functions<\/strong> <strong>within organisms<\/strong>, including\u00a0catalysing metabolic reactions,\u00a0DNA replication,\u00a0responding to stimuli, providing\u00a0structure to cells\u00a0and\u00a0organisms, and\u00a0transporting molecules\u00a0from one location to another.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our bodies are<\/strong> <strong>constantly recycling proteins<\/strong>, so the ones that we eat in our diet can be used to replace broken down proteins in order to <strong>maintain balance<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"uppercase\">Protein and Muscle Mass<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Muscle mass is built when the net protein balance is positive<\/strong> (+) : muscle protein synthesis exceeds muscle protein breakdown.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research shows that muscle protein turnover is the <strong>greatest after working out<\/strong> and muscle mass increases over time when <strong>resistance exercise<\/strong> (<em>i.e.\u00a0<\/em>weight lifting, body weight exercises, etc) is combined with <strong>nutrient intake<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, it is recommended that <strong>10-35% of your daily energy intake <\/strong>comes from<strong> protein<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recommended daily intakes (RDIs) can also be calculated by a person\u2019s<strong> body weight<\/strong>. At this point, you must been wondering how to spread that recommended protein intake throughout your day?<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2246\" src=\"https:\/\/calisthenicsnerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/maximum-protein.jpg?w=750\" alt=\"maximum amount or protein \" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although <a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-018-0215-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researches<\/a> suggest that, for optimal results, you should spread your daily protein intake throughout your meals, truth is <strong>there is no &#8221;maximum&#8221; amount of protein your body can digest in a meal.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The belief that our body can only digest up to 30 grams of protein at a meal, is completely wrong.<\/strong> You don&#8217;t digest up to certain amount of protein and then, all of a sudden, stop digesting food.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your body will digest all of the protein provided in a sitting,<\/strong> although, most of the protein from a hight protein meal won&#8217;t go to building muscle. Hence, if this is your main goal, you should <strong>spread the protein you eat throughout the day.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <em>Now, what really happens to the protein if you eat it all in one meal?<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is no long term storage site for amino acids<\/strong>, the building blocks of protein. Your stomach tissue will hold some amino acids temporarily, but these won&#8217;t do much to build muscle later on accordion to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23260197\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this research<\/a>, from N. Deutz and R. Wolfe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After eating a meal packed with protein, some of that protein will go into <strong>building muscle<\/strong>, some into <strong>building other structures<\/strong> in the body (proteins, neurotransmitters etc) and the rest of the protein is <strong>used for<\/strong> <strong>energy or converted to <a href=\"https:\/\/calisthenicsnerd.wordpress.com\/2021\/04\/23\/how-to-lose-fat-the-most-efficient-way\/\">body fat<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nitrogen (from amino acids) is combined with other compounds to form urea, which is processed by the kidneys and <strong>extracted in the urine.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <em>But then, how much protein should I eat per meal?<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That depends on several factors such as:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Age<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Training status<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Lean body mass<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Health status<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Total daily calorie intake (if you are cutting calories, total protein needs are higher)<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Overall amount of protein consumed per day<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Quality of protein<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Other nutrients consumed at meal time<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"uppercase\">Protein and Weight Loss<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1061\" src=\"https:\/\/calisthenicsnerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/alternate-day-fasting-involves-alternating-between-a-24-hour-22fast-day22-when-the-person-eats-less-than-25-of-usual-energy-needs-followed-by-a-24-hour-non-fasting-22feast-day22-period.-1-1.png\" alt=\"total energy expenditure\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Total energy expenditure<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>balance<\/strong> between the amount of calories you are eating (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Total Energy Intake<\/strong><\/span>) and the number of calories you are burning (<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Total Energy Expenditure<\/span><\/strong>) is a key factor which dictates your ability to\u00a0lose weight,\u00a0maintain optimum weight or\u00a0improve your body composition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Total Energy Expenditure<\/strong> is the sum of <strong>Resting Energy Expenditure<\/strong>, the thermic effect of <strong>food<\/strong> and energy expenditure related to <strong>activity<\/strong>. With<strong> Resting Energy Expenditure<\/strong> being the largest component (65\u201375%).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Protein<\/strong> has the potential to play a key role in<strong> Resting Energy Expenditure.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/87\/5\/1558S\/4650426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> shows that<\/strong> <strong>protein<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>is particularly<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>thermogenic<\/strong>. The metabolic energy of\u00a0<strong>protein<\/strong> is 17 kJ\/g, but it&#8217;s net metabolizable energy is actually 13 kJ\/g, making it lower than either <strong>carbohydrate<\/strong> <strong>or fat<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This means that you consume more energy digesting protein, than when you digest carbohydrate or fat. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, a moderate <strong>increase in dietary protein<\/strong> combined with a physical activity like <a href=\"https:\/\/calisthenicsnerd.wordpress.com\/2020\/11\/17\/what-is-calisthenics\/\">Calisthenics<\/a> may improve the <strong>regulation of body weight<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"uppercase\">Protein in Foods<\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general rich sources of protein are <strong>meats, fish, legumes, eggs and milk products.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protein intake from animal sources rather than plant-based sources tend to have <strong>better absorption rates<\/strong>.
